Septic system inspection

In some regions of the United States periodic septic system inspections are required. Typically, systems will pass or fail based on BOD, TSS and F-Coliform levels.

BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) is a measure of how much oxygen is demanded by the organisms in the effluent. The higher the BOD, the less suitable the water is to support aquatic life. If too much water with a high BOD is released into lakes and streams, it can choke the wildlife, killing fish and plants.

TSS (total suspended solids) is a measure of solids in the effluent. Solids that leave the septic system can be dangerous because they carry pathogens like F-Coliform and salmonella. These can get into the ground water and then move into lakes and streams which are water sources for farming and animals, as well as human drinking water.

High TSS levels also mean that solids will collect in the leach field, which can lead to problems with septic system wet spots and septic system backup, and will eventually lead to a failed system.

High BOD and TSS result when the microbes in the system cannot degrade waste sufficiently before it leaves the septic tank. This can be because water moves through the system too quickly or because the microbial population is too weak to handle the wastes.

Solution for a failed septic system inspection

• Use Septikos® to strengthen the microbial population
• Conserve water to increase degradation time

In order to properly degrade waste and control BOD, TSS and F-Coliform, microbes need to be strong enough and water must be in the system long enough. Septikos® takes care of both by quickly multiplying and strengthening the microbial population.

A strong native microbe population can properly degrade waste and even difficult substances like oil and grease. They can do it in less time than would otherwise be necessary. They also degrade sludge in the septic tank, allowing more water to stay in the tank longer. Plus, they will be strong enough to take care of pathogens like F-Coliform. The result is an effluent with fewer solids, which means lower OD, TSS and F-Coliform.
