Case study

The septic system of an 80-year-old farm house in Medina County, Ohio could not pass requirements of the county Health Department. The owners received notice to vacate the property by June 30, 1998. The owners began using Septikos™ on June 27, 1998 by applying it to the toilet nearest the septic system and directly to the septic tank. After only 48 hours, the Health Department found a dramatic reduction in solids, BOD and TSS and elimination of odors. After three weeks of using Septikos, the effluent was crystal clear. On three subsequent inspections, the Health Department declared the system normal.

Situation:
Health Department notified owner to vacate residential property based on septic tank condition.
• Original septic system in 80-year-old house; 1200 gal. capacity
• Tank was overflowing; visible septage; leech-bed plugged; bad odor
• Problems had been ongoing for previous three years
• Health Department notified owner of need to vacate property until septic system replaced
• Samples showed BOD at 450 mg/l
• Samples showed TSS at 117 mg/l

Solution:
Health Department allowed owner to treat with Septikos.
• 48 hours before Health Department inspection, owner applied 2 lbs. Septikos in toilet nearest septic system
• Simultaneously applied 2 lbs. Septikos directly to septic tank

Results:
Health Department allowed residents to remain. 48 hours after treatment, Health Department samples showed:
• Dramatically reduced solids
• Samples showed BOD at 45 mg/l
• Samples showed TSS at 28 mg/l
• Odor eliminated

The Health Department required BOD levels of 2 mg/l and TSS levels of 4 mg/l. After three subsequent inspections, the system was declared normal. The owner was not required to vacate the property or replace the system.
